Adults and children, ages six and older are welcome to become Acolytes. Training is required for each "level" and is scheduled as needed.

Serving as an Acolyte in church is a very visible and important ministry to our parish. The very word “acolyte” comes from the Greek word akolouthos, which means a servant, follower, or companion. The acolyte is a servant who assists the deacons, priests, and bishops to help celebrate the liturgies.

At Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, our acolytes help ensure that the liturgies go smoothly and assist the Clergy in celebrating the sacraments. Thus, the role as an acolyte should be taken up with reverence, diligence, and care.

The music ministry at Johns Memorial follows a rich and lively tradition of Anglican music. Under the direction of Christopher Swanson, Associate Professor of Music at Longwood University, and with Organist Peggy Hargrave, the Choir of Johns Memorial provides weekly liturgical music during the 10:30 a.m. service.

The choir rehearses every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Choir Room of the Parish House. If you would like more information about the Choir or to become a member, please contact  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

The Children's choir meets Sunday 9:15 a.m. in the Parish House from the Sunday after Labor Day until the Sunday before Mother's Day.

The Altar Guild is the ministry of preparing and maintaining the altar, sacred vessels and vestments for our worship services. Members of the Altar Guild perform a silent or hidden ministry to our Parish so that we may worship and glorify Christ. Members are trained and assigned to a rotating team that is responsible for the services during a given month.

Preparations for weddings, funerals, and baptisms are also the responsibility of the Altar Guild.

The Altar Guild cares for the linens, communion silver, liturgical hangings, candles, and brass vases which are used in the various services. The changing vestments and altar hangings remind us of the progression of seasons in the Christian calendar, and they accent special services throughout the year.

The Altar Guild works closely with the Clergy, complementing the ministry of the Word and Sacraments.
