Farmville Area Community Emergency Services (FACES) is a community-based program that provides food to local families in need. Johns Memorial participates in this program to help eliminate hunger in our community and as extension of our ministry to our brothers and sisters. In 2003, Johns Memorial assisted in receiving a grant for $12,000 from the Episcopal Church's United Thank Offering to purchase a delivery truck for FACES to help meet the increasing demands on the program. Other recent grants have made possible repairs to the truck.

Each Saturday, throughout the year, community groups gather at FACES Food Pantry (located off the parking lot at the northern end of South Street next to Green Front Furniture) to help bag, organize, and distribute food donations to area over 800 families.

Johns Memorial is responsible for providing volunteers for the first Saturday of each month. Volunteers work the morning shift from 8:00 A.M. until 11:00 a.m. To find out how you can help with this important ministry, please contact our parish liaison Geoff Orth. Geoff can be reached at home at (434) 392-3922.

Volunteers are also needed on Fridays at the FACES Food Pantry 11:30 A.M. to help unload and organize the weekly delivery from the Central Virginia Foodbank.

FACES continually needs your support for:

  • Food donations ---fresh vegetables and fruit are very welcome during the growing season, taken to the pantry on Saturday morning
  • Canned goods
  • Finances - FACES is able to purchase food by the pound, at substantial savings from retail outlets
  • Paper and plastic bags

There is a location in the Parish Hall where food and bag donations can be left. All donations are collected weekly for distribution. Charitable contributions are also encouraged and given to the Church (memo: FACES) to help provide support and to purchase more food.

Johns Memorial has been active in Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that builds homes in partnership with people who lack adequate shelter, for many years. For more information about the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity, click here.
