Helping Our Military Families - please save coupons, even expired ones. We will collect these clipped coupons and mail them off for use by military folks and their families. It turns out that expired ones are honored for six months at military bases. There is a box in the parish house in which to place your coupon contribution. We will mail the coupons off periodically. For more info, see Mike Lund or Donna Andrews.

Confirmation Exploration Classes are now scheduled for Wednesday’s during Lent, starting 2/22. These classes are especially designed for anyone over 14 who would like to “confirm” their Christian faith in the context of the Episcopal Church. One hopeful result would mean you would want to be Confirmed by the Bishop when he comes on April 15 – although that is not a requirement to attend. In fact, all are welcome! Please talk to the Rector for more info.

The Annual Meeting and Vestry Elections is scheduled for March 25 after the late service. The Nominating Committee consists of those Vestry Members rotating off: Jeff Halliday, Mike Utzinger, and Mark Lenker. If you feel you may be called to serve on the Vestry, please talk to one of them.

Leading a Holy Life Task Force
Beginning the Conversation

The Living a Holy Life Task Force is a group of lay and ordained persons from the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia called together by our bishop for the following purposes:

  • To foster conversation throughout the diocese around issues of human sexuality.
  • To foster awareness in the diocese around issues of human sexuality that will be addressed at the 2012 General Convention.
  • To support a strong and healthy community within the diocese which allows us to confidently, courageously and compassionately address these issues in the midst of our differences.

The conversation, with a new question each week, takes place here: http://holylifetf.blogspot.com

The Very Rev. Keith Emerson (St. Paul’s Suffolk) authors this week's blog post:

"In Lent 2010, the House of Bishops received a report titled Same-Sex Relationships in the Life of the Church.  It was prepared by eight theologians who, in the course of their work, split into two "affinity groups," one conservative, the other liberal.  In the preface, the document's editor acknowledged that the terms 'conservative' and 'liberal' have limitations, but still used them because people easily identify what each confers.

I share this apprehension.  As we Episcopalians in the Diocese of Southern Virginia begin a twenty-five week electronic conversation, I worry that defining our positions as liberal and conservative will have negative consequences.  I fear it will encourage us to mirror the most unhelpful elements of our nation's political discourse; incivility, narrowness, and "I'm right/you're wrong" thinking.

I wonder if there is a better way to frame our discussion." (read more at the blog)

I invite and encourage you to comment on posts and interact with post authors and readers. Please begin after reading the instructions on the "How do I enter the conversation" page of the blog.
